Orientation

Before beginning my Dietetic Internship, I completed an intensive orientation week totaling approximately 30 hours, which served as a comprehensive introduction to clinical practice and prepared me for the demands of my rotations. During this week, we covered a wide range of foundational and applied topics essential for success in medical nutrition therapy. A major focus was on performing nutrition-focused physical exams (NFPE), where I learned how to assess muscle and fat stores, identify signs of malnutrition, and integrate these findings into clinical decision-making.

We also received in-depth training on total parenteral nutrition (TPN), including understanding indications, components, and monitoring requirements. In addition, we practiced various clinical calculations, such as estimating energy, protein, and fluid needs, which are critical for developing individualized nutrition care plans. The orientation also reinforced knowledge related to diabetes management, including carbohydrate counting, blood glucose monitoring, and nutrition interventions for glycemic control.

Another key component of the training was learning how to conduct effective patient interviews, focusing on gathering dietary history, assessing nutrition-related concerns, and communicating clearly and professionally with patients. We also reviewed anthropometric measurements and body composition assessment, which are important tools for evaluating nutritional status and tracking patient progress.

Overall, this orientation week strengthened my clinical knowledge, improved my practical skills, and increased my confidence in applying the Nutrition Care Process. It provided a strong foundation that allowed me to transition smoothly into my rotations and deliver more effective, patient-centered nutrition care
